Thompson hails from Ladera Heights, California and attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School where he excelled on both basketball and baseball teams, becoming two-time All-American in each sport while helping win a state championship for each. Following graduation he committed to UCLA Bruins’ college basketball program but ultimately decided instead to follow his dream of becoming a professional baseball player.
After graduating high school, Thompson was selected by the Chicago White Sox during the second round of the 2009 MLB draft and went through their minor league system before being called up by them for his major league debut on August 4, 2015. As part of their team he made several notable catches in outfield and also earned himself several highlight reel catches during that time.
In January 2022, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for catcher Hector Santiago and spent one season before being sent off again – this time to Oakland Athletics where he struggled with injuries and only appeared in 18 games before ultimately being released in June of that year.
After his release from Oakland A’s, Thompson signed a minor league deal with San Diego Padres in February 2023 and was then invited to spring training with their organization.
