Keni Burke is an American R&B, soul, funk and jazz singer-songwriter-record producer-multi-instrumentalist who first gained international exposure as part of the Seventies band the Five Stairsteps. As part of this family band featuring siblings Clarence Burke Jr, James Burke Dennis Burke (later renamed Rami), Alohe (then changed her name to Rami), Clarence Burke Sr (retired Chicago Police Officer and proud band manager of his sons Clarence Jr and Dennis), 13-year old Alohe (who changed her name to Rami) scored hits including their classic 1970 hit “O-oh Child”. Their proud band father Clarence Burke Sr (retired Chicago Police Officer himself to manage his band), chauffeured his kids around in his Chevy Impala station wagon before later shifting them all around in his eight-door Checker Aerobus.
In 1981, Burke released his self-produced solo followup album You’re the Best which included singles “Hang Tight” and his signature hit, “Risin’ to the Top.” This latter song became popularly sampled by hip hop artists such as Doug E Fresh (“Keep Risin To The Top”), Big Daddy Kane (“Smooth Operator”), LL Cool J (“Around the Way Girl”) Pete Rock & CL Smooth (“Take You There”) Mary J Blige (“Love No Limit”) O.C and 50 Cent (“Paradise”).
On his 1998 album, Nothin’ but Love, Burke continued his session and production work for artists like Peabo Bryson, The O’Jays, Jones Girls and Keith Sweat. Additionally he collaborated with Paul Weller in hosting an annual Spiders from Mars tribute concert as well as recording an album of original compositions of his own.
