McNair was born February 14 in Mount Olive, Mississippi and raised in a modest tin roof house with four brothers. At Mount Olive High School he excelled in various sports. While at Alcorn State he earned three All-America selections. Following graduation he was drafted by the Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans), where he led them to their inaugural Super Bowl appearance and earned three Pro Bowl selections before eventually going back and playing for Baltimore Ravens before eventually retiring in 2008.
McNair earned numerous achievements and recognition during his 13-year NFL career, including being honored three times as Most Valuable Player (MVP), co-MVP alongside Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and co-MVP honors in 2003. Alongside these on-field accolades, he was active in his community by raising funds for charity events.
McNair was married to Mechelle McNair from June 21, 1997 until his death on July 9, 2009. Together they had two sons: Tyler and Trenton. Additionally he fathered two other sons through other relationships: Steven O’Brian McNair and Steve LaTreal McNair Jr.
