Katherine s. Long worked for NASA before she became Miss Universe. She helped launch an astronaut into orbit. She calculated a landing path and worked on a report that was the first of its kind, written by a woman. Her contribution was instrumental in launching the shuttle Spirit, and she was instrumental in helping a woman achieve her goal of becoming a scientist. While Katherine was at NASA, she was married to Jim Johnson.

While Katherine loved teaching and felt that she had a duty to her race, she tended to focus on the practical side of life. She instilled discipline and taught self-respect in her students, following the well-worn path that a Negro college graduate. Eric Epps, her friend, mentioned a job in Hampton, Virginia. This sparked a long-buried dream.

She worked with renowned mathematicians and scientists while she was at college, and was the third African American to earn a PhD in mathematics. After a successful career at Langley, she retired in 1986. She loved her job and was happy to go to work every day. In 2015, President Obama awarded Katherine s. long with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Despite the difficulties of being a woman in the world of science, Katherine s. long found comfort and stability in her work. Jimmie, her husband, died in 1956 from a brain tumour. Katherine turned to her career and her three daughters for support. She worked nine to five and sometimes even stopped to see her daughters at home. Katherine felt fulfilled and happy in her career, but she also worked long hours and put her children’s welfare and needs first.

Katherine was a young maid and proud that her job did not require her to do domestic duties. She was the first woman in her family to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the country. But she had to overcome the racial and gender stereotypes in the workplace to do so. Katherine’s life is very similar to that of Chien-Shiung Wu, a Chinese American scientist. She overcome her prejudices through hard work and perseverance.
