Cruiser Trampling

While the majority of cruisers avoid the problem altogether, there are still a number of signs that they’re engaged in cruising. This type of activity is characterized by the occupation of sex spots and the generation of unauthorized paths. In some cases, it can even be found in areas with legal conservation status, such as dunefields. In some cases, the behavior is not so obvious and a camera may capture it.

For instance, a study in the Journal of Environmental Management identified 298 “intercourse spots” in the coastal dunefield. These spots are located in areas with dense vegetation or nebkhas (wading dunes). In addition to the impact on the dunefield, cruising also has significant environmental impacts. It damages nebkhas and destroys eight native plant species, three of which are endemic to the region.
