WDIA DJ Bobby O’Jay’s death has caused widespread mourning among his fans and was celebrated for his contributions in broadcasting – both locally in Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame as well as being nominated nationally. As known by his moniker “The King of Memphis Radio”, this legendary disc jockey spent nearly four decades as America’s first Black radio station. He leaves behind his wife Kim Ojayrleda and six children: Bonita, Kacey, Chandi, Joey and Joshua from his first marriage with Sharon (deceased), who passed away in 2017.
O’Jay was born Joe Louis Jones and resided in Batesville, Mississippi. His career in radio DJ began in 1972 at WDIA radio in Miami Beach where he quickly rose through the ranks to secure an anchor slot by 1983. Known for engaging with listeners through storytime-style segments.
O’Jay could often be found attending concerts and sporting events outside his regular broadcast schedule. A big sports fan in Memphis, he enjoyed cheering for their teams while entertaining audiences with his sharp sense of humor – often making puns or cracking jokes on air!
He had many close friends who supported his efforts and stood by him during times of need. He was known for being kind, gentle, and loving – all attributes which will be greatly missed by his many admirers.
Cause of his death has yet to be disclosed; however he will be remembered fondly for his extraordinary talent and love of community involvement.
