At first, he worked as a western swing guitarist. Growing up poor meant working hard just to make ends meet; at 19 he purchased his first guitar from a pawnshop before eventually joining Hank Thompson and His Brazos Valley Boys as lead guitarist.

Billy first married Donna Wilkes, an actress. Their divorce occurred in 1977. In 1967 he married Helena Kallioniotes but unfortunately this union ended two years later; from this union came two children, both sons.

Gray is also an accomplished entrepreneur, boasting his own line of motorcycle parts and accessories under Big Rock Engineering, such as self-massagers and high-tech guitar picks, both produced under his company. Additionally, he holds several patents.

Gray is a devout Christian with strong beliefs in God. Involved with charity work and particularly passionate about educating young children, he serves as an active member of Second Baptist Church of Harrisburg where he also participated in marches alongside Martin Luther King Jr.

In the late 1980s, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. While this affected his speech and walking, it did not prevent him from continuing his career in acting – the Actors Studio awarded him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Since then he has made guest appearances on various television shows as well as being an award-winning writer; currently working on screenplay projects. Furthermore he is active fundraiser for various charities; is proud grandfather and avid motorcyclist – owning over 80 motorcycles including classic Harley-Davidsons that he collects; these rides allow him to spend quality time riding together with family.
